The Art of Ignoring the Rules

(and Making Your Own)

Hey Reader

You ever have one of those moments where you realize—Wow, I’m really bad at this? Yeah, me too.

Hand-drawn typography was my kryptonite in art school. We had to recreate classic typefaces (Baskerville, Caslon, Helvetica—all the fancy fonts), by hand. With rulers, ink, and precision so tight it made my brain hurt (yes, making me feel like a dinosaur as this was pre-computer aided design). And guess what? I sucked at it. Smudges, spills, shaky lines—I was a mess.

My professor even told me, straight up, I would never design my own typeface. (Ouch, right?)

For a while, I believed him. I stuck to picking fonts, not making them. But somewhere along my creative journey, I stopped trying to be what I wasn’t—clean, precise, mathematically perfect. Instead, I leaned into what I was: expressive, loose, and a little chaotic in the best way.

And one day, just for fun, I created my own font—a messy one. No rulers. No perfection. Just pure, unfiltered me. It’s called Scribly: A Perfectly Messy Font, because, well…that’s what it is. (You can check out my fonts right here if you’re curious.)

Here’s the thing: people will tell you you’re not good enough. That you don’t have the skill, the talent, the whatever to do the thing you want to do. And you have a choice: believe them, or prove them wrong.

The real win? Doing the work of self-discovery. Knowing who you actually are—and owning it. That’s where the magic happens.

And if you need help on that journey? I got you.

Tag. You're it. Hey Reader Remember when you were a kid, and every day felt like a big experiment? You didn’t overthink things. You just played, built, destroyed, and rebuilt until you made something awesome—or at least had fun trying. Somewhere along the way, we were told to get serious. (Insert eye-roll here.) Here’s the thing: serious is overrated. Experimentation and play are the keys to creative growth. In my book, Make Fun A Habit, I talk about how embracing a playful mindset doesn’t...

But I let go. Hey Reader I quietly hit publish on something that’s been with me for a long time. Blue: A Story of Letting Go is now available. It’s a small book. But it holds something big.I first wrote the words three years ago and tucked them away in the Notes app on my phone. I wasn’t sure if anyone else would ever read them. It started as something personal. A quiet reminder to myself about love, loss, and the courage it takes to let go of what we wish we could keep. Bringing it to life...
